How to read the map. The country runs about 870 kilometres north to south and its 26 natural atolls are administered as 20, each with a letter code you will see on a transfer schedule. Velana International Airport sits in Kaafu, beside Malé, and every journey starts there: speedboat for the islands around the capital, seaplane for the central and northern atolls, and a domestic flight followed by a speedboat for the far north and the far south.

Pick an atoll for its transfer as much as for its islands. A short speedboat suits a large party arriving on different flights; a seaplane suits a couple with a day to spare; a domestic flight opens the quietest atolls.
