A local-island wedding is not a resort wedding at a lower price; it is a different day. The rooms are guest houses rather than villas, so a week for the family costs a good deal less. The venue is agreed with the guest house and the island council rather than a resort's events team, and the neighbours are Maldivians going about their day. The ceremony goes on the bikini beach set aside for visitors or on a sandbank by dhoni; the dinner in a guest-house garden or on the harbour front.
