Dosa.
15 November – 27 November. Dosa is the last nakaiy of Hulhangu. It sits in Hulhangu, the south-west monsoon: wetter, quieter on the islands, and planned with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner.
Dosa runs from 15 November – 27 November, the eighteenth of the eighteen nakaiy of Hulhangu and the twenty-seventh of twenty-seven. The nakaiy are the traditional Maldivian almanac, about thirteen days each and named for the stars; fishermen still read the weather by them. The north-east wind is on its way, the lagoon calms and rain becomes occasional rather than expected. Fishermen read it as the run-in to Iruvai.
Hulhangu is the wetter monsoon: a south-west wind, short showers that often pass within the hour, and a sky with more shape than in Iruvai. The islands are quieter. Planning starts with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner, decided on the afternoon, and with décor anchored, low and heavy so wind is a texture, not a problem. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so transfers and set-up are booked around the light. How we plan for rain sets out what we hold and when we decide.
The lagoon settles and the light sharpens towards Iruvai. Sunset falls around six and evenings are mostly clear. Set-up runs in the open, décor needs less weighting than in mid-monsoon, and dinner on the sand is the usual plan, with cover held as a courtesy. At four degrees north the length of the day barely changes and the golden hour is short, 30 to 40 minutes rather than sixty. We time the ceremony to it, and Golden hour in the Maldives explains how.
